Galvanised Finish Screws, Fasteners and Fixings
In this process, a galvanised finish, the fastener or fixing is hot dipped in zinc to prevent against corrosion. It’s generally applied to steel or iron.
The process of hot dip galvanising involves depositing a layer of zinc onto the surface of a steel item – unless the product requires additional coatings of paint for decorative reasons – where a thinner form, electro galvanising, is applied.
For fasteners that will be exposed consistently to corrosive environments or materials, more expensive stainless steel should be used as the protection provided by the hot dip galvanising is inefficient in high-corrosive use.
A galvanised coating is relatively thick, so any clearance holes and nuts will have to be tapped oversize to accommodate galvanised bolts.
For fasteners smaller than M8, the thick hot dipped galvanised finish fills too much of the threads, reducing strength, meaning that electro galvanising would be a more fitting finish for these fasteners.
