Nylon Screws, Fasteners and Fixings
Nylon is an extremely popular plastic for use in fasteners and fixings, and they are especially suited for electronic work. It’s popular due to its high-tensile strength and higher wear resistance than products like aluminium.
Nylon is popular because they melt rather than burning, which is desirable in an electronic application where a fire is more likely to break out. Flame retardants can also be added to the nylon during manufacture.
It has excellent resistance to a number of chemicals and hydrocarbons, whilst also providing a high amount of insulation whilst remaining lightweight.
Different plastics can be used to manufacture nylon fasteners, and each of them has different benefits. Polyvinyl chloride, otherwise referred to as PVC can be used to boost resistance to the elements, and polypropylene can be used to improve durability.
There are some applications in which nylon fasteners are not designed to be used. Generally, use in water is not recommended, as nylon is hygroscopic. This means that it absorbs water, even from the air, and when wet, the fastener could swell and deteriorate at a faster rate. If exposed to sunlight, the nylon will yellow due to a lack of resistance to UV.
