Screw Cutting

We stock a wide range of fasteners, and for non-standard lengths, we can offer an economic solution of cutting down from longer lengths to the desired length and can be undertaken in small to medium volumes until the quantity reaches economic viability.

This can be done using a screw-cutting lathe – a machine capable of cutting very accurate screw threads – a fastener of any length can be cut to size. They are cut with the lathe for accuracy and versatility. The lathe is one of the oldest, and most important machine tools and have been in use for hundreds of years before they were adapted for metal cutting.

Other methods of Screw Cutting

A common method of screw cutting is thread milling, which cuts along a helical tool path. This has been possible since the 19th century but has never really become popular until technology began to advance – and now both internal and external threads are milled.

There is also thread grinding, which is done on a grinding machine that uses specially dressed grinding wheels matching the shape of the threads in question. The process is usually used to produce accurate threads in hard materials.

Thread forming and rolling are other processes. The former relates to producing internal threads and the latter external. This method is comparable to knurling.

Alternatively, bolt or machine screws can be cut using electric crimping pliers, which are great for a number of purposes and are handily marked with sizings.

They can also be cut with a hack saw, but this requires care to be taken in regards to damaging a thread.
