An external shakeproof washer is a tooth lock washer with sharp teeth formed around the outer diameter.
An external washer works well with round or pan head screws, or generally screws with a larger head.
The external teeth on these shakeproof washers grip to both surfaces whilst tightening, which creates friction in order to stop the nut from coming loose.
