A Metal (Metal Insert) Self Locking Nut is a torque prevailing nut that uses a metal insert located towards the top of the nut, reducing its inner diameter, which then deforms over the mating thread. This captures the bolt or screw, providing a locking feature causing resistance or prevailing torque – keeping the nut locked in position and resistant to vibration.
This design feature means that the screw threads do not cause damage to the insert, allowing the nut to be re-used.
Made to DIN 980M standard (ISO 7042), the Metal insert is more durable than plastic or nylon inserts making it beneficial for use with products that are serviceable or require maintenance.
The Metal Insert Self Locking Nut can also be used to assist in sealing the bolt thread against seepage of oil, water, petrol, paraffin, and other liquids. They can be used in environments with very aggressive temperatures and conditions where they can retain their locking ability up to 400°C, depending on the material and finishes.
Available from Fastenright in thread diameters from M4 to M36 as standard. Various materials and finishes are also available.
Non-standard sizes, materials and finishes are available to order as specials, including small volume manufacture, modifications and bespoke parts made to drawings. Minimum order quantities apply.
